Dave Baranek grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, and set his sights on flying Navy fighters. He attended Georgia Tech and participated in ROTC.

After his first F-14 squadron he was selected as an instructor at the elite Navy Fighter Weapons School, better known as Topgun. While serving as an instructor in 1985 he helped make the film "Top Gun."
Dave enjoyed a successful 20-year career in the Navy, including command of an F-14 Tomcat fighter squadron. Our next gathering on February 9th will have this guest speaker.

Leo Murphy, EdD, FRAeS from ERAU, Daytona Beach will be our speaker at the EAA 724 February 9th gathering. He will be telling us about the Soviet Night Witches.

Night Witches (die Nachthexen) was a German World War 2 nickname for the all-female members of Soviet night bombing squadrons. A pilot and navigator flew in a two-seat, open-cockpit, Polikarpov Po-2 biplane. Their preferred attack technique involved idling their engines near the target and gliding to their bomb-release point. With only wind noise left to reveal their presence, German soldiers likened the sound to broomsticks and christened the pilots "Night Witches." Three squadrons completed nearly 24,000 combat missions by war's end, with 23 members awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union medal, equivalent to our Medal of Honor, for extraordinary bravery. Dr. Murphy will trace the history of the Night Witches and early Russian aviation milestones.

You won't want to miss this, it's quite a story.
